Hookworms are the collective name for nematodes of the family Hookwormidae, and the well-developed oral cysts are their morphological characteristics. Among the nematodes that parasitize the human digestive tract, hookworm is the most harmful. It is able to enter the body through the skin and then reach the intestine. They feed on human blood and can survive in the intestine for many years. Hookworms can cause health problems such as anemia and malnutrition, and are particularly dangerous for children and pregnant women. Hookworms have a worldwide distribution, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, where infections are more common in the population. The main parasites in humans are Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus Stiles. In addition, Ancylostoma ceylanicum Loose, which can occasionally parasitize humans, is similar to the first two hookworms in its harmfulness. The infective stages of Ancylostoma caninum Ercolani and Aucylostoma braziliense Gomezde Faria can also invade humans and cause cutaneous larva migrans (CLM). Because the larvae migrate sinuously and bend, causing a rash in the form of runner lines, so called creeping eruption. However, the larvae cannot develop into adult worms.
