Whipworms have a simple life history and are parasitic in the large intestine of humans and mammals. Adult worms are found in the human cecum and, in severe infections, in the appendix, lower ileum, colon and rectum. The adult worms invade the intestinal mucosa, submucosa and even the muscle layer with their elongated anterior ends, feeding on tissue fluid and blood. Due to the mechanical damage of the worms and the stimulation of their secretions, chronic inflammation such as congestion, edema or hemorrhage of the intestinal wall tissue can occur. Mild infections are usually asymptomatic. In severe infections, patients show symptoms such as loss of appetite, paroxysmal abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea or constipation, and occult blood in the stool or with a small amount of fresh blood. Severe infections in children are often accompanied by malnutrition, which can cause rectal stasis and prolapse.
